Hurskainen returns for third season at Loughborough

Henri Hurskainen has extended his stay with Loughborough Lightning for a third AJ Bell NBL season.

The 30-year-old Swede returns to Loughborough on the back of one win and two losses in the men's singles at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, as he went out at the pool stage.

Rio was his second Olympic appearance, after also competing at London 2012, and Lightning will be hoping Hurskainen acts as an experienced head in a team with an average of 20 across their 11 players.

Hurskainen will spearhead Loughborough's singles campaign in Season 3 of the AJ Bell NBL, and will be hoping to emulate his performances of Season 1.

With an overall win rate of 58 per cent, the Swede is a reliable presence in any side, but he particularly impressed in Season 1, winning five of his six matches.

He lost his unbeaten record at just the wrong time, losing to Rajiv Ouseph in the Championship Final, but re-signed for the East Midlands side in Season 2.

His second campaign was less successful, winning just two of his six matches, including two consecutive losses to end the season, so he will be keen to get back to winning ways when Loughborough take on the Surrey Smashers in Match Week one on October 17.

Loughborough, other than changing their name to Lightning for Season 3, will have a familiar look to the team this term as head coach Andy Wood puts faith in the squad that made it to the final in each of the past two seasons – the only departure being Team GB's Lauren Smith to Team Derby.
